LCD( Liquid Crystal Display)投影机分为液晶板投影机和液晶光阀投影机两类。液晶是介于液体和固体之间的物质，本身不发光，工作性质受温度影响很大，其工作温度为-55ºC~+77ºC。投影机利用液晶的光电效应，即液晶分子的排列在电场作用下发生变化，影响其液晶单元的透光率或反射率，从而影响它的光学性质，产生具有不同灰度层次及颜色的图像。
LCD投影机有两种。
液晶板投影机
成像器件为液晶板，是被动式的投影方式。利用外光源金属卤素灯或UHP（冷光源）。
按照液晶板的片数，LCD 投影机分为三片机和单片机
三片LCD板投影机原理是光学系统把强光通过分光镜形成RGB三束光，分别透射过RGB三色液晶板；信号源经过AD转换，调制加到液晶板上，通过控制液晶单元的开启、闭合，从而控制光路的通断，RGB光最后在棱镜中汇聚，由投影镜头投射在屏幕上形成彩色图像。目前，三片板投影机是液晶板投影机的主要机种。
LCD单板投影机机体积小，重量轻，操作、携带极其方便，价格比较低廉。但其光源寿命短，色彩不够均匀，分辨率较低。 目前单板投影机的机型已经很少。

液晶光阀投影机
采用CRT管和液晶光阀作为成像器件，是CRT投影机与液晶与光阀相结合的产物。为了解决图像分辨率与亮度间的矛盾，它采用外光源，也叫被动式投影方式。一般的光阀主要由三部分组成：光电转换器、镜子、光调制器，它是一种可控开关。通过CRT输出的光信号照射到光电转换器上，将光信号转换为持续变化的电信号；外光源产生一束强光，投射到光光阀上，由内部的镜子反射，能过光调制器，改变其光学特性，紧随光阀的偏振滤光片，将滤去其它方向的光，而只允许与其光学缝隙方向一致的光通过，这个光与CRT信号相复合，投射到屏幕上。它是目前为止亮度、分辨率最高的投影机，亮度可达6000ANSI流明，分辨率为2500×2000，适用于环境光较强，观众较多的场合，如超大规模的指挥中心、会议中心及大型娱乐场所，但其价格高，体积大，光阀不易维修。 对追求高分辨率、高亮度、大画面的用户，液晶光阀投影机是他们的首选。
